HAYS When the great Civil war was progressing in all its awfulness the subject of our sketch was born in Hardin county, Iowa. It was the year 1862. He staid in the place of his birth and received there his education. He grew to manhood amid the cornfields of Iowa, for he was a farmer and followed that business until he came to this county in1885. Since coming here he has followed various occupations as the occasion provided, being a man of great adaptability and versatility. He first went at that which seemed so congenial to him, farming, and he was able to as successfully raise wheat in this land as he did corn in Iowa. Later he took a position as clerk at the Hotel Pendleton, where he continued for seven years, until 1897. Here he showed that he was very successful in handling the large trade of this hotel since his services were so in demand. Finding that this too confining Mr. Hays again repaired to farming and so continued until he found a prime opportunity to make a successful venture in the boarding house business, which he did. After a season he sought the present position and found it congenial to his tastes and lucrative. He is the proprietor of the Telephone Stables. He takes pride in handling good stock and first-class rigs. He is always reaching out to make his business attractive and useful to his patrons, desiring to please and secure the good will of the traveling public, which he surely merits and enjoys. In December, 1882, before he left his native state, he was joined in the bands of matrimony to Miss Emma Ott, a native of that state. They have been blessed with four children: Edward E., Guy, Irma and Glen. Mr. Hayes is a popular member of the Woodmen of the World.
