HUBBARD We are pleased to accord to this substantial citizen and prominent business man of our county a place in the list of its worthy pioneers and leading men. He is a man of fine capabilities and a genial nature that wins him friends, while his integrity and faithful dealing in the common walks of life command the respect and esteem of all. He was born in the good old Blue Grass state, near Monticello, in Wayne county, on October 16, 1869, to Roland B. and Barthena E. Hubbard, born respectively on September 21, 1842, and February 27, 1848. There he received a good education in the public schools and worked on his father’s farm until 1888, when he came to Oregon. After some explorations he chose a pre-emption on Birch creek, near Pilot Rock, where he devoted himself to farming and stock- raising, with good success, until 1897, when he sold his land and removed to McKay creek, leasing land and taking up the sheep business, with his brother, Benjamin F. One year later he sold out this business and opened a store at the place where we now find him, at McKay postoffice, twenty miles south of Pendleton. He was appointed to the position of postmaster at this place on August 23, 1900, for four years, he being the first incumbent. Here he farms eighty acres of hay. He was married in Tennessee, on August 3, 1893, to Miss Ella A. Simpson, daughter of William A. and Louisa Simpson. She and her parents are natives of Kentucky. To this union have been born two children, Gracie E., October 22, 1894, and Roland, May 28, 1898, both being born in this county. Mr. Hubbard affiliates with the Methodist Episcopal church, being an ardent supporter of that faith, while his every day life is a consistent exemplification of the same. He is also a member of the W. of W., Camp No. 41, of Pendleton. The parents have had a family of ten children whose names and the dates of their birth are as follows: John W., July 12, 1867; Benjamin F., March 1, 1872; Nannie E., January 26, 1875, and died April 20, 1875; Robert, April 13, 1876; Edgar L., December 28, 1878; Mary E., July 2, 1881; Lucy A., June 16, 1884; Roland H., July 7, 1887; Sarah E., July 7, 1890; James A., July 11, 1893.
