JONES As one of the prosperous and enterprising young farmers with which Umatilla is signally blessed, mention must be made of the subject of this sketch, who fills an important place as one of the developers and sustainers of the county’s reputation for thrift and abundance. He is aiding in carrying on to a successful culmination that work begun by the early settlers, namely, transforming the wild wastes of nature into fertile fields and fine farms. He was born in Riley county, Kansas, on May 28, 1871, where his father, Daniel E. Jones, was a prosperous farmer, having come there from Canada. When but four years of age his father went to Chester county, California, where the remained for eight years, finally coming to this county. In the fall of 1883 they landed here and immediately the father took up a pre-emption claim, where he lived until 1900. To the schools of California and this count our subject is indebted for his education. About one mile south from his father’s place the son took up a homestead, where we find him at this time engaged in tilling the soil and raising stock, with a good share of prosperity attending his efforts. He was married in this neighborhood to Miss Emma Corley, a native of Missouri, whose father, Anthony Corley, came from that state to this county and is now numbered as one of our prosperous agriculturists. To Mr. and Mrs. Jones have been born two children: Myrtle May, born March 22, 1894, and Charles, now deceased. Mr. Jones is an active worker in the political field, where he is known as a warm champion of those candidates who render efficient service in honesty and fairness. He enjoys the confidence of his fellows, having been elected to several public offices, where his faithful service and genuine uprightness have been manifest to all and have received warm approval. Mrs. Jones’ mother, Sarah A. (Carman) Corley, died here January 19, 1900, and was buried at Mountain valley Chapel cemetery.
