PATRICK J. KELLEY To this esteemed pioneer and veteran of the Civil war, we are pleased to accord a place in this volume, since in addition to his fine capabilities and industry that have given him such a brilliant success in the financial world, it is most becoming to mention his faithful service in the halls of legislation, where he as wisely put forth sound principles of government as he bravely fought on the fields of blood to retrieve our flag from insult and save the union without dismemberment. In Lee county, Virnigia, on March 24, 1837, he first saw the light, and when but a child, was taken by his parents to Missouri, where he received a good education from the public schools and grew to man’s estate. When the seriousness of the struggle was apparent, he at once pressed to the front and offered himself for the defense of his country, enlisting in Company C, First Missouri Cavalry, early in 1862. Unflinchingly and continuously he followed this service on the field and in siege until he received a disability unfitting him for active service, being discharged on account of this on November 17, 1864. He returned to his family for one year and then set his face to the west, crossing the plains in 1865 with ox teams. He first settled near Walla Walla and engaged in farming for five years and then came to Umatilla county in 1870, purchasing land on the Walla Walla river which he still owns, five and one-half miles east from Milton. On this place he commenced stock raising in connection with tilling the soil and has steadily pursued this occupation since, achieving a very flattering success. He now owns three hundred and seventy acres of excellent land finely improved and well stocked, having also some well bred trotting horses. In addition to this he owns some good city property and a handsome home in Milton, where he now resides. He also operates a steam threshing outfit. When we note that Mr. Kelley only had five head of cattle and a wagon, together with some debts, when he commenced here, it is remarkable and very commendable the success he has gained. In addition to his business enterprises, he always finds time to devote to the proper care of political matters allying himself with the Democratic party. In 1880 the people called him from the farm to the state legislature, where he served with the same wisdom and faithfulness so characteristic of him in his whole course. He was married in Missouri, on August 3, 1856, to Miss Sarah J. Warren. After the marriage they spent one year in business in Missouri. To them have been born the following children: Jemimah A., wife of J. L. Ward, of Walla Walla; M. J., married and living near Wilbur, Washington; Ursulia V., wife of J. L. Milton, of Milton; Mary E., wife of Alexis Church, of Milton; R. E., married and living near Wilbur, Washington; Harry F.; Nora; and four deceased. Mr. Kelley is a member of the Christian church and is an ardent supporter of his faith. He is highly esteemed having been the recipient from his fellows of the highest honors they have to bestow, which in every respect he has merited because of his talents, his energy and his integrity.
