Here he maintains his position as one of the foremost men of this section, while his moral worth, striking enterprise and fine capabilities richly merit his well earned reputation. He was born in Meadville, Crawford county, Pennsylvania, on December 10, 1831, and there grew to manhood, being educated in the district school meanwhile. When twenty-four years of age he was led by the reports from the new opened region of the Golden state to try his fortunes there and so went thither via the Isthmus route. For eleven years he operated in the placer fields near Nevada City, California, and then returned home for a short visit. Again he came west via the same route and mined for about eleven years, and made a second visit to the old home place over the U. P. Railway. Later he went to Nevada and worked at the carpenter trade for a short time, when he came overland to Umatilla county in May, 1881. Here he bought a squatter’s right where he now lives, four and one-half miles west from Nye, adding later three hundred and twenty acres more by purchase, all of which he is tilling to wheat, barley and potatoes, raising some cattle. His whole place bears an air of thrift and industry which marks his activity and energy in matters of detail as well as in general affairs. He was married in Crawford county, Pennsylvania, on January 6, 1870, to Miss Harriet M. Leighty, a native of the same place. To them have been born the following children: Stella Z., now Mrs. Donald Ross, of Vincent; Henry E.; James M., the last two being at home with their parents. Mr. Kramer has always maintained the most strict loyalty to our free institutions, being a member of the “Caucasians” when in California, the object of the order being to retain the places in our land for whites as against the Oriental, while his demeanor here has been always that which would command the respect of every lover of liberty.
