Maloney James W. Maloney is the recorder of conveyance for Umatilla county and lives at Pendleton. He was born in Sullivan county, Missouri, in 1870. Thirteen years of his life were spent in that state, when he came to Umatilla county, where he has since resided. His first location in this county was at Athena. He attended the public schcools in his native state and here and then later took a course in the state normal. After this he took up school teaching and followed that three years. It is quite appropriate that immediately following the training of the schools one should in turn give back to the rising generation the benefit of that training. And then there is much training that the teacher also is gaining while he gives. Our subject became thus well acquainted in this his chosen county, and laid well the foundation for some of his later success. After the teaching he entered the commercial world at Athena, and from 1891 until 1898 was occupied with the grocery business, and during the Cleveland administration was postmaster. He also held the position of treasurer of Athena and school clerk for several years of this time. During all of this time he was steadily advancing in the estimation of his fellow citizens and becoming one of the stanch and established business men of the county. It was the proper exemplification of a lad of the county, by real worth and constant application to business rising among his fellows until they were fully aware that he was the one to be entrusted with the weighty affairs of the county government which were to affect all. Consequently in the spring of 1898 the people called him from his business and set him at the recorder's desk. He served, as was his custom in all service, in a faithful and satisfactory manner, and so in 1900 they said that he should again serve at the same desk. This accounts for his present position at the time of this writing, and what further successes are in the path of this young man the future will make known. If, however, one is to gauge the future by the past, then the people are sure to ever find in James W. Maloney a man to be trusted and a man whose ability as well as enable him to occupy whatever place of trust is theirs to bestow in a becoming and worthy manner. In his fraternal associations he is as popular as in his business life. He is a member of the Masonic lodge and is also a K. of P. He belongs to the A. O. U. W. and to the K. O. T. M., and is one of the Pioneers of the Pacific. He is grand prelate of the K. of P. He was married in the fall of 1893 to Miss Nora L. Zeiger, a native of Missouri. Their wedding occurred in Pendleton. They have two children, Wayne Y. and J. Harold. Mr. S. A. Maloney, the father of James W., one of the pioneers of this county, is now living with his son in Pendleton.
