Mr. Martin was born in Logan county, Illinois, on October 15, 1835, remaining there only three years, when he removed with his parents to Iowa. In that state were the scenes of his childhood and there he gained his school training. When eighteen years of age he commenced the battle of life for himself, first operating as a farmer, which occupation he has continuously followed since. His father was an attendant at the first land sales held in that territory. In 1864 our subject turned from the Mississippi valley and crossed the plains with ox teams to this country, settling for one winter in the county south and then coming to this county, where he has remained ever since excepting two seasons near Walla Walla. In 1870 he took up government land just above where Milton now stands and remained there for fourteen years. In 1884 he bought the place where he now resides, seven and one-half miles southeast from Walla Walla, which consists of two hundred and forty acres of excellent land. He also owns as much more four miles southeast from Milton, besides other property. His home place is finely improved with good substantial outbuildings and a handsome residence, together with all the necessary machinery and so forth essential for the proper carrying on of a first-class farm. Here he practices the diversified plan of farming, growing every crop that is profitable in this latitude and handling some of each kind of ordinary stock, having some well-bred specimens. The marriage of Mr. Martin and Miss Nancy A. Owen occurred in Iowa, on January 7, 1857, and to them have been born the following children: Monroe, married and living in Whitman county, Washington; Samuel J., married and living in British Columbia; John C., married and living in the Okanogan country; W. D., married and living close to Harney City in this state; C. D., married and living in Whitman county; Cleveland D., Jr., living at home; Margaret, wife of W. Windship, of Athena; Serilda, wife of Henry Churchill, of Whitman county, Washington; Isabela, wife of Willis Carter of this county; Effie, living at home and five deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Martin are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian church and are active workers in the cause of their faith, while their lives are an exemplification of the Christian principles. He is interested in the political affairs of the county and state as becomes they loyal citizen, having served in public office for a number of terms with faithfulness and efficiency.
