All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carlene Still jesco@oregontrail.com January 4, 2007, 11:25 am Author: Colonel William Parsons Page 506 Joseph Mason This esteemed pioneer and prominent citizen whose life of worthy activity has for nearly a third of a century been spent in the region now embraced in Morrow county, is one of those substantial and capable men who make up the bone and sinew of the leading communities, and has wrought here for the advancement of this section with energy and wisdom that commend him to all lovers of justice and goodness. Mr. Mason is a native of Portugal, his parents, Joseph and Olive (Seymour) Mason, being natives of the same place, and his birth occurred on November 24, 1831. At the early age of thirteen years he shipped on a United States vessel and came to this country, landing first in Massachusetts, whence he traveled to California, operating in various mines of that state until 1858, when he came to Oregon and settled in Salem. In 1871 he came to the section now embraced in our county and took a homestead and timber culture, where he now resides, eight miles southeast from Ione on Rhea creek, engaging there in the same occupation which he followed in the Willamette valley, the agricultural art, adding here, however, stock raising. He raises six hundred acres of wheat and about fifty acres of alfalfa. His stock is horses and cattle. He has added many valuable improvements to the estate, such as a comfortable residence, a commodious barn, good orchards, etc. Mr. Mason and Miss Augusta, daughter of Fred and Louise (Yonker) Bales, of Portland, were married in 1870 and they have become the parents of ten children: Frank F.; Ella C.; Clara F., wife of John O. Kincaid; Bertelle; Jessie M.; Nettie L.; Helena M.; Mabel: Walter E.; Joseph. Mr. Mason is an active participant in the political affairs of the county and state, being allied with the Democratic party. In church affiliations he is associated with the Catholic and is a liberal contributor not only to that denomination but to all worthy causes of religion and education, as well as what will ameliorate the condition of his fellows and he is a highly respected and esteemed gentleman and one of the most worthy representatives of Morrow county.
