W. MATHEWS The work that the pioneer began so well in Umatilla county has been carried on with energy and skill ever since by a class of men from every portion of the states, and one among that number who has gained a fine reputation because of his real integrity and worth and because of his continued industry and kindly demeanor among his fellow men, it is now our pleasant privilege to outline in brief review of his life. He was born in Edgar county, Illinois, on February 20, 1863. There he lived with his father for fourteen years, gaining a good common-school education and learning the art of the agriculturist. In 1877 he went with the family to Chase county, Kansas, where his father bought one hundred and sixty acres of land. The next year they moved to Lyon county, the same state, where they bought one hundred and sixty acres more on the Kaw reservation, remaining there for two years, when the father died. The next spring the subject of this sketch removed to Holt county, Nebraska, and engaged in work on a ranch, where he remained for two years, at the expiration of which time he came to Idaho, working on the construction of the railroad. In this work he passed through Umatilla county in 1882 going to the Willamette valley, and remained there for one year working on a ranch. In 1883 he came to Pendleton and commenced work for J. M. Hemphill on his stock ranch. One year after this he engaged with Henry Stover, with whom he engaged in handling stock for two years and then rented the Bird Johnson ranch for one year. After this he bought a squatter’s right on unsurveyed land and stayed there for thirteen years, raising stock with fine success. In 1889 he bought one hundred and sixty acres, where he now lives, four miles east from Pilot Rock, and by purchase he has increased the estate to one thousand acres. At the present time he is giving his whole attention to stock raising, owning fourteen hundred head of sheep, and large bands of cattle and horses. His wool clip amounts to over twelve thousand pounds annually, besides the returns from the market sheep and cattle and horses. On October 17, 1886, he was married to Miss Bertha Roesch, a native of Germany, and to them have been born the following children: Stella, Julius W., Maud, Gertrude, Lewis, Helen. Fraternally Mr. Mathews is united with the I. O. O. F., Eureka Lodge, No. 32, of Pendleton, and Lodge No. 10, United Artisans, of Pilot Rock. Coming to this county as an employe of the railroad, he is a good example of what pluck, intelligence and enterprise will do, having by his energy and wise operations placed himself in a very short time among the leading stock men of the state. He is looked up to as one of those men upon whom one can rely, who performs well whatever he undertakes to do, and adding to this his genial nature and uprightness, has won the respect and confidence of all.
