McDonald Our famous free institutions have a wonderful attraction for many born in other portions of the globe, and when they come hither to realize the benefit to be derived from this free land of the world they often manifest a deeper appreciation of its benefits than many born within its boundary. From the regions of Canada came the subject of this sketch to find for himself a home in this land of his choice. Pontihak was his native town, being born there on November 9, 1855. His father, R. R. McDonald, was a farmer living near Cornwall, but has since passed away. The subject of this sketch stayed with his parents until 1878, and received a good education in the fine schools of that land. At the date last mentioned he started into the world for himself and came first to the Black Hills in South Dakota, where he engaged in freighting for three years, from which place he came directly to Umatilla county. In this county he has since made his home; for the first ten years of his stay here he was engaged in various enterprises, ever by his economy and industry accumulating means with the determination to embark for himself in some permanent occupation at the proper time. In 1891 he purchased his present home on the south portion of the reservation, being the first one to purchase land in that section. Here he has bent his energies to improve and develop his farm and in addition has been engaged in the sheep business. He has made commendable progress, having a goodly number of sheep as well as a bunch of other stock. He was married, in Pendleton, on November 24, 1889, to Miss Geneva Allen, whose father, John Allen, is a prosperous stockman of Pendleton. To them have been born two children: Edith C., born January 17, 1890; and Allen Clement, born June 5, 1895. Mr. McDonald affiliates with Lodge No. 41, Woodmen of the World, at Pendleton. He is active in all local affairs and school matters, and his ability and faithfulness have been recognized, for he has been called upon to serve in the important office of school clerk for five successive years. His uprightness and good geniality have made him well known and respected, while he justly merits the approbation he receives from his fellow citizens.
