McLeod An influential and prominent citizen of our county, whose career of exploration and business enterprises has been one of marked success, is the man named at the heading of this article, while his moral worth and ability are recognized by all. Born among the rugged hills of Scotland on a farm in the county of Caithness in the year 1844, he there acquired a good education and spent the first eighteen years of his life. At that time he turned toward the colonies, selecting New Zealand, and went thither. His young blood wrought well in the placer mines on the Mollineux river for three years, and then he turned toward the sheep industry, the station where he was employed handling one hundred thousand sheep. For two years he operated there and then undertook the butcher business, where he was engaged in Teviot for two years more. Succeeding this he went to Melbourne and then Sidney, with the intention of shipping for Africa, but finding that he would have to go via Liverpool he abandoned that and, by the aid of the American consul, was received on board a freighting ship bound for San Francisco. He arrived in that city in February, 1869, and after one month's stay repaired to Los Alamos and engaged on a stock ranch for eighteen months, after which he turned to the north and landed in Umatilla county in May, 1871. Here he commenced operations on a sheep ranch, shearing during the season, until 1872, and then purchased a band of one thousand sheep and settled down to sheep raising on a ranch he had taken near Adams, this county. For sixteen years he followed this, devoting his whole time and energies to it, with the result of a most prosperous business, with very flattering returns in finances. He then sold out his entire interests in that part of the county with all of his stock and purchased a fine residence in the city of Pendleton, where he still resides. On July 26, 1888, in Pendleton, he was married to Miss Annie McLaughlin, a native of Illinois. To them have been born Lottie J., March 31, 1889; Johnnie S., September 5, 1896; Wm. S., January 17, 1893, died May 20, 1894. During the war of 1878 Mr. McLeod was out with the volunteers in the mountains looking after his stock. Among his possessions may be mentioned one- half section of fine land beside his residence in the city and numerous other holdings. Our subject has always been a man noted for his reliability, integrity and uprightness, and he is signally favored with the confidence of his acquaintances, which is thoroughly merited.
