McReynolds This representative and substantial citizen, whose life of enterprise and industry compled with integrity and good financiering, has been potent for advancement and upbuilding both in his native state and here, is accorded a place in these historical records, commensurate with his worthy achievements. He was born in Sonoma county, California, to Jacob and Telitha McReynolds, on December 19, 1853, being the first American child born in "Big Valley." He received his primary education in the common schools and completed it in Heald's Business College at San Francisco. He was taken by his parents on a visit to their old home in Missouri when he was four years old, and it is of note that when they were returning to the coast the next year the mule train stuck in the mud at one point on the plains and our subject was determined to walk back to California. He followed dairying with his father until twenty-one years of age and then leased six hundred and fifty acres of land and commenced the same business for himself, which he followed for five years, then sold out and bought a stage line from Petalurna to Bodego Corners, which he operated for one and one-half years. Selling this, he came to Umatilla county in 1881, homesteading a quarter-section on Camas prairie, later adding a one half-section by purchase and pre-emption. Here he devoted his whole attention to dairying and stock raising with very flattering success until 1894, when he sold out, excepting a good bunch of stock, which he still handles, to accept the management of the Ukiah creamery, where he is now operating. This plant is one of the leading ones of its kind in this part of the state, and a model in every respect, having all up-to-date machinery for the handling of milk and the manufacture of butter. The output is over nine thousand pounds per month of a class of butter not to be surpassed anywhere in the United States. The creamery under the care of its excellent manager is kept most scrupulously neat by the latest scientific sanitary measures known to this business, while his geniality and courteousness to strangers make it a pleasure to inspect it. Mr. McReynolds was married in Santa Rosa, California, on January 12, 1875, to Miss Lucy I. Boynton, a native of Clinton county, Iowa. Her parents, Amos A. and Jeanette Boynton, were pioneers to California in 1858 and to this county in 1883. Her father resides in Ukiah, her mother having died here in 1898. To Mr. and Mrs. McReynolds have been born the following children: Luella May, wife of George Spere, of Baker City; Francis R.; Myrtle L., wife of Clyde Gibson, of New Whatcom, Washington; Chester R.; Irma J.; Florence V.; Eva E.; I. Ward, all at home except the two married ones. Our subject is the incumbent of two public offices and was census enumerator in 1900. He affiliates with the United Brethren church, the liberal branch, where he is highly esteemed.
