Michael The career of our subject presents one round of industry and activity that bespeak an energy and wisdom far above the ordinary, and place him among the leading business men in this part of the west; coupled with this he has a reputation for uprightness that his every day life demonstrates is fully merited and has been instrumental in placing him in the center of a large circle of admiring friends. He first saw the light in the Keystone state, Columbia county, on February 8, 1854, where his father, Andrew Michael, was an operator of canal boats on two of the principal canals of the state. He remained with his father until 1877, acquiring a good education and such a practical training as afterward made him the successful man that he has been. In 1880 he came to Mitchell county, Kansas, and bought a farm of one hundred and sixty acres, where he lived for two years, then selling out he went to Norton county, the same state, and took up a homestead, staying upon it for two years. During that time he was occupied with contract work on the grade of the B. & M. R. R. in Nebraska, and later was superintendent of construction on the Union Pacific in Kansas. In the winter of 1882 he went to Nebraska and took contract work on the Missouri Pacific, and the next year found him operating on the Oregon Short Line in Idaho. In the fall of 1883 he first came to Umatilla county as operator on the construction of the O. R. & N. R. R., and the spring following was in Portland and was solicited to take full charge of the grading of the Northern Pacific to Kalama. After this was successfully accomplished he went to Washington and pursued his vocation on the Northern Pacific in that state. After this he came to Pendleton and put in a switch from the main line of the O. R. & N. to Byers' mill. April 1st of 1885, he moved to Pilot Rock and engaged in farming and stock raising, where he was very successful. It was in 1891 that he bought the place where he now resides, two hundred and twenty-seven acres. In addition to this he owns half a section adjacent to Pilot Rock, which is all first-class wheat land and is all under cultivation. On February 11, 1875, he was married to Miss Mary E. Reynolds, whose father was a general merchant in Sullivan county, Pennsylvania, where their marriage occurred. To this union the following children have been born: Lilli May, born May 20, 1877; Ellery E., born November 13, 1879; Ella R., born June 11, 1882; Charles A., born December 28, 1886; Sadie E., born April 17, 1887; Bessie, born August 17, 1888; John W., born October 12, 1891; Roy M., born March 17, 1893; Nora B., born August 31, 1894; Josie M., born April 9, 1896; Ivy M., born November 26, 1897.
