MOORE Among the many early farmers of this rich county we have been asked to give a space to the one whose name appears at the head of this article. It is with pleasure that we do so, as, indeed, any history of the county would be incomplete without this mention. He was born in the state of Wisconsin March 23, 1853, to Josiah and Abbey (Farr) Moore and resided there until he was twenty-five years of age. During that time he acquired a good common school education and then took up farming, which he followed closely until he decided to travel and see the western country. In 1877 he went to California and looked over the state somewhat, spending two years within its boundaries. The northern part or the Pacific coast drew his attention and he turned thitherward upon a tour of inspection until he landed in Umatilla county in 1880. He sought no further, but at once took up a pre-emption and later a homestead claim, where he now lives, eleven miles northwest from Pendleton between Despain and Stage gulches. Here he bent his energies to bring forth the wealth from the soil and his abundant success is visibly testified to all for he has increased his original claims to a mammoth estate of eight hundred and eighty acres and has it all improved in an excellent and substantial manner with a good, comfortable house, fine roomy barns and other outbuildings, together with a thrifty young orchard, etc. All this he has taken out of the soil and accomplished in the time he has been in the county. Mr. Moore, though among the most thrifty and well-to-do farmers in this region, is not given to the sordidness of simply gathering early goods, but is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church and active in its matters and welfare. He has always shown himself one not to shirk the responsibilities of the school and local affairs and the county government, realizing that what is the welfare of the county at large is his interest and welfare as well. This he has always sought and now in the prime of his life, with the results of his wisely ordered labor surrounding him, success having crowned his efforts in almost every line, he enjoys the respect and esteem and confidence of his fellow citizens and is looked up to as one worthy to be confided in.
