MORRISON It is with pleasure that we accord space in this part of our volume for a brief resume of the life of the prominent citizen whose name heads this paragraph, and who has wrought so faithfully in forwarding that which he deems for the welfare of the county at large and its citizens. Born to Hugh H. and Cynthia (Chapman) Morrison, on February 11, 1862, in Adams county, Illinois, he acquired there the mental training to be had in the common schools, and at the age of twenty-one years sought the west, coming first to Missouri, where he stayed for one year, then on to Wyoming, visiting various portions of the state, and later settling in Kansas, where he followed farming. In 1888 he again turned to the west and came to Umatilla county. After a couple of years he toured through the Potlach country in Idaho, spending two years in his explorations, and then finally returned to this county and bought eight hundred acres of land where he now lives, twelve miles north-west from Helix, on the north fork of the Juniper canyon. Here he has put forth skillful efforts in husbandry with becoming returns. Although his estate is mammoth in proportions, even this is added to by renting nearly five hundred acres more, all of which he farms, thus demonstrating his capabilities for carrying on successfully large enterprises. Mr. Morrison was married to Miss Pearl Adams, daughter of William H. and Mattie (Burns) Adams, in 1890. To this union there have been born the following children: Claud D., Daisy V. and James C., all of whom are living; and Reta M., Effie C. and Della Pearl, who have died. During the years in which he has lived in Umatilla county Mr. Morrison has always found time from his many duties to take a lively part in school and local matters, as also in politics. The principles for which the Democratic party stands are those he believes to be right and seek to uphold. He is frequently delegate to the conventions, is chairman of his precinct and a member of the county central committee. Upon his farm he has erected good improvements, as a comfortable dwelling, barns, etc., and the thrift and enterprise that characterize him are manifest everywhere. A man with the courage to carry out his convictions and judgment to guide him in the right, he had made a place for himself in the estimation of his associates and the confidence of the people of which he may justly be proud.
