N. CHRIS NELSON
	Among the thrifty and industrious immigrants from his native land, 
Umatilla county has secured in the person of the subject of this sketch a fine 
addition to her agricultural and stock-raising population, who by his strict 
attention to business has materially added to the wealth of the county as well 
as replenished his own exchequer.
	He is a native of Jersley Sogn, Denmark, and was born on May 31, 1866. 
He lived with his father, who was a farmer and stock raiser in that country, 
until he was fourteen years of age, and during this period acquired his 
schooling. When fourteen years of age he commenced to work for his cousin and 
continued here for seven years, following which, in 1888, he became enamoured 
with the reports from the new world and made up his mind that this was the 
place for him. Accordingly he came hither and settled in Shelby county, Iowa, 
where he followed farming for two years, at the expiration of which time he 
transferred his residence to Umatilla county, and has since that time 
maintained it here. For six years immediately succeeding his advent to this 
county he was occupied in herding sheep, thus gaining a thorough and practical 
knowledge of this important industry. By economy and strict industry he had 
accumulated sufficient funds by this time to warrant his going into business 
for himself, and he accordingly bought a bunch of sheep and so successful has 
he been that at the present time he is rated as one of the prominent stock 
raisers of the county, and bids fair, continuing his wise methods with his 
wonted enterprise, to soon rank high among the very leaders in that industry. 
At the present time his holdings amount to three-quarters of a section of good 
land, two and one-half thousand of sheep, a fine bunch of horses and cattle 
and plenty of improvements with all necessary utensils, etc., for operating 
his land and stock business.
	He was married at his place, on November 25, 1897, to Miss Sadie 
Caldwell, a native of White Pine county, Nevada. They have been blessed by the 
advent of two children: Ruby May, born September 1, 1898, and Walter L., born 
May 7, 1901. Mrs. Nelson’s father, Samuel Caldwell, was a stockman of this 
county, and died November 11, 1896. Her mother, Mrs. Ellen Caldwell, still 
resides in the county. Mr. Nelson is a member of Viola Lodge, No. 114, A. O. 
U. W., of Pendleton, and is very popular there as well as in general business 
and social relations.
