Patton A brief outline of the active and varied career of the prominent stockman and agriculturist whose name heads this article is justly accorded a place in this volume, and with pleasure we contemplate one whose integrity and ability have won him a position of merited distinction, which his intrinsic moral worth has adorned during a lengthened life of diligence and industry. Mr. Patton was born on February 9, 1842, in Butler county, Pennsylvania, and passed his early childhood on a farm. In 1848 his parents moved to another part of the state and his father entered the flour milling business. Until the spring of 1860 he remained at home, gaining a good education and much experience that was very beneficial in the after years of his life. For seven years subsequent to leaving home he was engaged as a pilot on the Ohio river, and then turned his attention to the oil business, operating with the Bear Creek Oil Company, in Armstrong county, Pennsylvania. In this occupation he was engaged for thirteen years, when he came to Montana and operated a sawmill for one year. After this he came to Umatilla county and took up a pre-emption, continuing in its cultivation for seven years, or until 1887, when he removed to the Grande Ronde valley and built a sawmill, which he successfully operated for four years. At the conclusion of this venture he embarked in the sheep business in the Columbia valley, which was a remunerative industry and prosecuted for four years, at which time he sold out and bought the ranch where he now lives, on Birch creek. Here he has divided his attention between the stock business and agriculture, and has achieved a financial success. In March, 1900, in company with Alonzo Knotts, he built a feed and planing mill and established a lumber and feed yard at Pilot Rock and a sawmill at California Gulch, all of which he still operates with a good trade and still increasing patronage. He was married to Miss Felicia Smith, a native of New York, in Smethport, Pennsylvania, McKean county, on October 12, 1864. They have had born to them the following children: Cora May, born January 16, 1867, now Mrs. J. B. McDill, superintendent of the county hospital; Herbert A., born May 10, 1869, and now a resident of Walla Walla; Mary A., born March 15, 1871, now Mrs. E. A. Rineheart, whose husband is a stockman on Camas Prairie; Lee R., born September 10, 1873, in the sheep business in Montana; Alonzo R., born July 29, 1875, now residing in Lagrand, Union county, this state; Sarah E., born November 26, 1877, now Mrs. H. C. Dunn, of McKay; Robert T., born January 26, 1879; Maggie B., born April 15, 1883; Beulah P., born July 3, 1885; Lorn F., born November 26, 1886. Mr. Patton was the first settler at Camas Prairie. He is a member of the Christian church, where he is well known for his activity and generous support of the gospel, while in his every day life he is manifesting that stability and practical Christianity that commends him to all and he merits the respect and esteem that is bestowed generously upon him.
