ROUMAGOUX A most worthy and prominent citizen of our county, a leader among the agriculturists and a man of marked capabilities, the subject of this sketch is allotted a place in the pages of this volume, both because of his own intrinsic worth and devotedness to the welfare of the county, where he has wrought out such a brilliant success, demonstrating his financial and executive abilities, together with his marked talent in the various enterprises in which he has operated. He was born in the sunny land of France, of good French stock, which is sufficient to account for the enterprise and wisdom manifested in his career. The place of his birth was near Charansa, in the county of St. Gervais Dept. Puy-de-Dome. Here he grew to manhood, working on his father’s farm during the time he was not engaged in acquiring an education. In addition he learned the stone and brick mason trades, at which he worked until he joined the army to fight in the Franco- Prussian war. During his military service he participated in the battle of Orleans, where about twenty-five thousand men were engaged, his side being victorious. When he left the army his first move was to the new world, landing at Portland, Maine, on March 26, 1872. Shortly he went to Montreal and followed his trade there for seven years, helping to build the custom house and the Catholic academy. From here he went to Portland, Oregon, in 1878, whence after one month’s stay he came to Pendleton, via the Columbia river to Umatilla Landing, and thence by stage. For a short season after his arrival he was engaged in well digging and then commenced to operate as contractor, being the first brick mason in the town. He built Melarkey’s brick store on Main street, the first in the city and which still stands, also the foundation of the court house and many others. After eight years he retired from this business and took up his ranch on Alkali. To the tilling of the soil and stock-raising he has continuously devoted his attention since. To the original ranch he has added by purchase until he now owns nearly one thousand acres of excellent wheat land, where he raises wheat, barley and oats, also cattle and horses. At the present time he has about fifty head of cattle and sufficient horses to carry on the farm. He was married near Pendleton on the reservation, on December 24, 1881, to Miss Eliza O. Caillee, a native of Montreal, Canada, who came to the United States December 1, 1881, to join Mr. Roumagoux and be married. To them have been born eight children: Emma K., Victor F., Arthur I., Lillie A., Pearl M., Grace F., Felix A., Blanche L. They are all members of the Catholic church, where our subject is held in worthy estimation for his faithfulness to the requirements of his religion and his active interest in the welfare of the mother church. He is also a member of the W. of W., Camp No. 41, of Pendleton. In addition to all his other arduous duties he finds time to discharge those devolving upon him from his repeated elections to public office. Mrs. Roumagoux’s mother died many years ago, but her father, Isaac Caillee, is still carrying on the business of dairying near Montreal and is quite hale and hearty, although over seventy-five years of age. She is a member of Daphne Circle, W. of W., No. 2, of Pendleton. Our subject is generously favored with the esteem and confidence of all who know him, while his integrity and probity merit a place high in the roll of honor.
