He as born in Ohio, on May 5, 1841, to Henry and Hester (Ford) Rust, natives of Maryland and pioneers to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and finally to this state, the father being buried near Salem, and the mother in Salano county, California. Our subject received his education in the old log school house of Ohio, where the schools were maintained by subscription. He worked with his father on the farm in early youth, coming with him across the plains, using horse teams. One of their teams was stolen near Boise and he traded an old family gem for another in order to make their way across the remainder of the distance to the Willamette valley. Here they farmed and raised stock until 1879, when this son came to Umatilla county, settling on Web slough, near Ridge postoffice. Here our subject lived and in Pendleton, until the time of his death, which occurred on December 19, 1894, and his body lies buried in Olney cemetery in Pendleton. He was married to Miss Mary E. Smith, in Polk county, near Dallas, on January 12, 1867. To them were born the following children: John H., of Park City, Montana; William O., at North Yakima, Washington; Joseph A., Early E. and Albert E., on the home place; N. Olive, wife of Herbert Thomson, of Baker City; Mary A. and Jessie A., at home with their mother; also George G., deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Rust were both members of the Christian church until they came to Umatilla county, when they joined the United Brethren church at Ridge. Since his death Mrs. Rust has joined the Salvation Army, where she holds the position of treasurer. Mr. Rust owned a large stock ranch, where he was raising sheep at the time of his death. The three sons mentioned now operate this place and carry on a wool growing business with marked success. Mrs. Rust is now residing in Pendleton, where she owns considerable property. The deceased was a man of great charity, always giving to the full extent of his means, both to individuals in need and to churches of all denominations. He was especially noted for kindness to those in his employ, as well as to all. His was an exemplary Christian life filled with those deeds commended by the Saviour whom he so devotedly followed, while the light of such an example can scarcely be overestimated, although he has gone to reap the rewards for which he so faithfully toiled.
