Rust This substantial and representative citizen of Umatilla county is a native of this state, being born in Polk county and brought by his parents, William and Mary E. Rust, to his present home, two miles west of Ridge post office on Butter creek, when he was six years of age. He was educated in the public schools of Pendleton and has wrought in this county ever since with a faithfulness and enterprise that have placed him as a leader among our progressive population. He remained with his father on the old place, assisting him in the sheep raising industry until the latter's decease, which occurred in 1894. Five years after this time he entered into partnership with his brother, William O., engaging in cattle and sheep raising. They possess at the present writing about two thousand head of fine young sheep, one-fourth blood Oxford, with other stock in proportion and land sufficient for pasturing the same. He was married, in Pendleton, on August 22, 1894, to Miss Leona Peterson, a native of this county, whose parents, Marshall and Perlina Peterson, were early pioneers. Her father was in the Bannock war, where he was badly wounded, escaping from the savages by crawling a long distance in the creek. Mr. Rust is a member of the United Artisans, of Pendleton. He is esteemed by all because of his geniality and ability, while his integrity and uprightness are exemplary in every respect.
