SHAFER From every quarter have come those whose meed it is to gather up the wealth that nature has so lavishly bestowed in this county, and among that number there is one whose industry and capabilities have lifted him high in the realms of success, and whose integrity and uprightness have stamped him as one of the leading citizens in this agricultural utopia. The place of Mr. Shafer’s birth is Pennsylvania, and his parents, Wesley and Savilla (Sterling) Shafer. The date of his nativity is March 14, 1860. For seventeen years he remained in the Keystone state and gained the training to be had in the common schools. In the fall of 1877 he traversed the continent and settled in this county on a piece of railroad land that he since homesteaded. To this he has added as much more by purchase and has now a fine farm of three hundred and twenty acres, upon which he raises wheat, summer fallowing portions of his land each year, thus keeping it in fine condition. He has a good young orchard, a fine residence, and all the other improvements that his place demands. For several years he was occupied in raising horses, but now gives his attention to growing wheat, in which line he has achieved good success. On May 1, 1892, Mr. Shafer took to himself a wife, Miss Cora E., daughter of T. G. And Emma (Duff) Elgin. They have four children, Lester, Savilla I., David W. and Seth O. In his fraternal relations Mr. Shafer affiliates with the Modern Woodmen and the Maccabees. In the Indian war of 1877-8 he was a volunteer, but did not get into any of the fights. Since the time of his advent into the county until the present he has demeaned himself in such a worthy manner that he has won the confidence of those with whom he has associated and his strict attention to business has commanded the respect of all. Just entering the prime of life, with a fine competence for temporal needs, and plenty for a working capital, still grater achievements may be expected from the same careful operations that have produced so abundantly.
