The son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Edlinger) Shick, natives of Pennsylvania, his life began in that state on October 31, 1831, and there he continued to reside until he was twenty-five years of age. During this time he gained a good common-school education and also acquired much experience in the ways of the business world. After this he came west to Minnesota, and a few years later went to Nebraska, where he resided for eighteen years. It was while living in this territory that the call came for troops to fight for the flag, and quickly Mr. Shick responded, enlisting in 1862 in Company A, Second Nebraska Cavalry, under Captain Reed, Major Armstrong and Colonel Furnace. He was in continuous service for fourteen months, but had enlisted for nine. During this time he participated in the White Stone Hill battle, and for the balance of the time was in a continuous running fight after the Indians. On November 2, 1857, Miss Martha J. Bender, daughter of David and Lydia (Tawney) Bender, became his wife, and to them have been born nine children, six of whom are deceased, Edwin, Charles, Harry, William, John and Nonna, and three, Victor, Ladora and Arthur, are living. In the fall of 1877 Mr. Shick left Nebraska and sought a place in the west, which he found in this county. He took up the homestead where he now lives, five miles northwest from Athena, and has added, by purchase, eighty acres more, all of which he has continuously farmed since. His principal crop is wheat, of which cereal his summer fallow land will produce thirty bushes per acre annually; the varieties his experience has proved the best for this locality are red chaff and blue stem. Although his realty holdings are not so great as some of the wheat farmers in his section, still he has made a marked success in growing that crop, and his land is exceptionally tilled and an air of thrift and care is perceptibly pervading his premises. He has a good house and other substantial improvements, and he has made a name for himself by his fairness and upright life, coupled with wisdom in the affairs of the world, that is respected and esteemed by all his large acquaintanceship.
