Smith, M.D. Charles J. Smith was born in Pickaway county, Ohio, August 23, 1864, and was reared at his birthplace. There also he received a good common school education. Later he studied at the Northwestern University. It is evidence of rare precocity that at the age of sixteen he had completed these studies and had taken a school to teach, which he completed well. Then for four years he followed teaching. At the age of twenty he entered the office of a doctor and read one year, and then in the fall of 1885 he entered Starling Medical college and continued there until his graduation in the spring of 1888. Thereupon he took up the practice of medicine in Derby, Ohio, until the autumn of 1889, when he entered the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, from whence he graduated in the spring of 1890. It was now decided by him to turn to the west and accordingly he came on to Walla Walla and entered into the employ of Dr. Blalock of that city. Later he was sent by Dr. Blalock to Pendleton, where he practiced for him for one year, and then opened an office for himself. Since locating in Pendleton he has taken two more post-graduate courses in New York, one in 1893 and one in 1896. He has uninterruptedly continued his practice in this city since his settlement here. In this day when there is such great temptation for men to launch themselves upon the public with nothing but wind in their sails, it is refreshing, to say the least, to see a young man from his first inception of the matter lay out a good long and honest course to fit himself for his chosen profession and then to accomplish it. A glance at the record of this man's work in the institutions, where are centered the skill and brains of the medical faculties, and which foster real advancement and development, is sufficient to show that his has been a most thorough, patient, studious and accomplished course of courses. Backed by the real integrity and merit of the man such a fitting will win success in spite of all obstacles that can show themselves. It has done it, as is well evidenced by the confidence of the people reposed in him. He has been chosen mayor of the city of Pendleton, member of the school boards and also of the board of health. His standing among his colleagues of the medical profession is of the highest order. He is a member of the National as well as of the State Medical Societies, being the vice-president of the latter. He has a good holding in landed and other properties, being interested in farming as a relief to the strain of continued mental labor. Pendleton was the place of his marriage, for Oregon, his chosen home, could produce the "helpmeet" for that home. Miss Lillian Gulliford, the daughter of a prominent family and a native of Oregon herself, is now Mrs. Dr. Smith. They have been blessed with the advent of one more to share their joys-- Gwendoline. The Doctor and his wife affiliate with the Presbyterian church. Additional Comments: An Illustrated History of Umatilla County by Colonel William Parsons and of Morrow County by W. S.
