He was born in Futon county, Illinois, on December 14, 1844. His father, Eli Stewart, a tailor by trade, moved with his family to Muscatine, Iowa, in 1845, and continued there, working at his trade, for four years. The next year after the great rush to the gold fields of the Pacific coast, Mr. Stewart made ready and took his family with ox teams to Portland, Oregon, landing there in the fall of 1850. One item worthy of note is, that even at such an early date as mentioned, Mr. Stewart made the whole trip in company with no other wagons, a feat that bespeaks his courage and skillfulness. Soon after arriving in Portland he started a tailor shop and the first auction store in that city, while Mrs. Stewart was active in starting and operating a hotel. They took up a claim two miles west from the city, what is now known as the poor farm, and remained there until 1860, when they came to Pilot Rock, this county. Mr. Stewart’s wagons were the first to bring settlers south of Umatilla Landing. He took up a homestead on Birch Creek, what is now known as the Ganger place, where he lived until 1890 and then sold to the present owner. Our subject remained here with his father until 1876, when he took up a squatter’s right on unsurveyed land at the head of Stewart creek. He continued there for two years, and moved to Pilot Rock and started in the livery business, continuing therein until 1898. He built the Pilot Rock Hotel and livery barn now operated by David Wright. In the spring of 1898, he moved to his present fine domain of over eight hundred acres of fertile land, where he devotes his whole attention to stock raising, in which line he is eminently successful. At his father’s home on Birch creek, on February 22, 1875, he was married to Miss Mary C. Pomeroy, daughter of Walter Pomeroy, a pioneer of 1845 who settled near Portland. To them have been born seven children, as follows: Jennie D., born May 15, 1876, now in Portland; Winferd E., born August 22, 1877; Carl G., born February 20, 1882; Walter H., born November 20, 1887; Georgia R., born August 25, 1890, Daphna J., born November 11, 1895; Inez M., born January 14, 1897. Winfered E. and Carl G. are in business in Pendleton. Our subject was educated in the public schools of Portland and has since been active in keeping abreast with the times. He manifests a lively interest in the issues of the day, taking part in political matters and school affairs, using therein the same good judgment that is so characteristic of him in all of his business life. It is worthy of note that the elder Mr. Stewart was a colonel in the Oregon militia.
