Vanskiver Few of the many who have come from the eastern states to Umatilla county have greater regard and love for the west than has he whose name appears at the head of this article, for to him it has given both health, owing to its salubrious climate, and prosperity because of his wisdom to judiciously operate the resources it placed in his hands. Our subject is a native of Iowa, where he received a good training in the common schools, and also learned the carpenter's trade. His parents were William T. D. and Adaline (March) Vanskiver. Just at the age when men begin to achieve success in the beginning of life he was forced from active service by ill health, and in 1880 determined to try the west to recuperate his depleted physique. The same year he landed in Umatilla county and from the first day began to improve until he became hale and hearty man once more, and has remained so every since. About two years after his arrival here he homesteaded a quarter twelve miles northwest from Helix, where he now lives. To this he has added as much more and by careful and wise farming has steadily prospered. He makes a specialty of wheat, and after careful experiments is convinced that the blue stem and the red chaff give the best results in this region. He raises sufficient stock of all kinds for necessary purposes on the farm, but agriculture pure is that which interests him most. In religious faith our subject is associated with the United Brethren church, and in fraternal relations affiliates with the Masonic order and the Maccabees. In 1888, on January 27, occurred the marriage of Miss Amy, daughter of J. R. and Arantha (McClure) Corporon, and David N. Vanskiver. Being a man of integrity and uprightness, he has gained and holds the confidence and esteem of his neighbors and colleagues, and is looked up to as a worthy citizen and faithful patron of the interests and good of all.
