HUGH G. WALKER
	Among the representative men of Umatilla county, must be mentioned he 
whose name initiates this article, and whose continued activity, guided by 
wisdom, has placed him in the front ranks of western agriculturists.  Ontario, 
Canada, is his native land, being born there, October 7, 1860, and there also 
he passed the first fifteen years of his life, obtaining a good education from 
the common schools.  In 1877 his energetic and aggressive spirit impelled him 
to investigate the west, and he came as far as Weston in this county, where he 
commenced to till the soil.  Later he bought a right to a quarter section and 
homesteaded it, this being in Morrow county, and after proving up, sold it and 
came to the place where he now lives, two miles east from Helix, and purchased 
his present farm.  He owns here three-fourths of a section of excellent wheat 
land, which by skillful husbandry he causes to produce an average yield of 
thirty bushels per acre per annum.
	On January 18, 1898, he was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with 
Miss Minnie F., the daughter of Joseph and Harriet (Courtney) Greer.  Mr. 
Walker has added the necessary improvements that his farm demands, guided by 
good taste and practical judgment, and a general air of thrift and comfort 
pervade his premises.  He discharges his political duties with that same sense 
of care and wisdom that characterizes all of his other enterprises.  Although 
popular among his large acquaintance, he has never accepted any public office, 
being better satisfied to let others have the honors there acquired.  Although 
just entering the prime of manhood, Mr. Walker has already achieved a greater 
success than many who have finished what is termed a successful career, so we 
may look to see him still push forward with every increasing popularity and 
accumulations that his intrinsic worth surely merits.
