The grand old country of England, Derbyshire being the local spot, is his native land, and August 27, 1859, is the date of his birth. His father, James Whittaker, was a real-estate holder of that shire, and occupied in agriculture, but passed away when this son was two years old. The mother, being a woman of ability, managed the affairs, and in October, 1874, our subject being then fifteen years of age, she sold her possessions in their native place and turned to the new world. They reached Oregon in November, 1874, being one month and five days making the trip from Liverpool, England, to Oakland, Douglas county, this state, coming via New York. Here the family, consisting of mother, two sons and one daughter, stayed with the uncle, Thomas Bainbridge, for one month and then rented a farm in the neighborhood, occupying it for eighteen months. After this they removed to Green Valley and rented a farm of seven hundred acres, where they remained for four years. In 1878 our subject hired to D. M. Boone to drive a band of two thousand, five hundred sheep across the mountains into eastern Oregon, which he accomplished, returning to his home, where he remained until the spring of 1879, when he again entered the employ of the same gentleman to assist in operating his sheep ranch. It was in the fall of that same year when he first came to Umatilla county and purchased the ranch where he now lives from Samuel Anderson. Here he has been occupied ever since in stock raising. His marriage occurred in Oakland, Douglas county, on May 8, 1879, when Miss Susan M. Boone, daughter of D. M. Boone, daughter of D. M. Boone, a native of Ohio but now a farmer of Polk county, became his bride. To them have been born three children: Mary Elizabeth, born October 15, 1881; Nettie Grace, born April 12, 1883; James H., born September 4, 1889, all still at home with their parents; Clara Alice, born April 24, 1891, died February 30, 1892; Franklin W., born September 9, 1895, died January 11, 1899. Mr. Whittaker affiliates with the Maccabees, Lodge No. 27, at Pendleton. He has been quite active in furthering improvements in the county, laying the first road from Camas to Pilot Rock. In school matters he participates with interest, having served a number of years in the public offices of the same with an acceptable record. He is a member of the United Brethren church and is prominent in its affairs, while in his life he manifests strict loyalty to his faith, which, with his good neighborly qualities, make him greatly esteemed.
