WILDER When civil strife treatened to rend this fair land in twain and end our existence as a nation, the subject of this sketch was one that offered himself to fight for the right, and if needs be lay down his life in the defense of his country. He did valiant service in the war as well as in the battles of life subsequent and previous thereto, and has left an example of integrity and enter- prise worthy to be followed by the rising generation. He was born in Pennsylvania on August 25, 1839, but was removed by his parents to Illinois when but a child. There he was favored with a good education and grew to manhood, gaining excellent training in the art of agriculture and business. On April 6, 1862, he enlisted in Company C, Second Missouri Cavalry, and served for a little more than one year, when he was discharged on account of wounds received in battle that disabled him for active service. About one year later, on August 28, 1864, he was married to Caroline V. Parsons, and to them were born the following children: Llewellyn A.; James F., married and living in Pullman, Washington; Annie J.; Zella C. After his marriage he settled down to farming in the home state and remained until 1875, when he came to this county and took up government land. In 1877 they bought the right on the place where Mrs. Wilder now lives, being two hundred and forty acres. In this county on March 19, 1881, Mr. Wilder was called to lay down the affairs of this life. His remains are buried in Milton cemetery. His was a life of constant activity and faithfulness, while his integrity was a bright light to all. Mrs. Wilder still lives on the old home place, seven miles south from Walla Walla, which she is carrying on in a commendable manner, having it improved with tasty and substantial buildings and the land in a high state of cultivation.
