Yates Among the early families of America was that of Yates, and the name is woven well through our history, being familiar to every reader. The subject of our sketch belongs to the original stock that is now spread through the states. The present governor of Illinois is also one of them, and through that state the name is especially connected with the places of responsibility and political trust. It was in that state also that the one whose life we now briefly chronicle was born, March 11, 1858, was the time and Peoria county the place of his birth. The farm was the place of his childhood and also of his earlier manhood. He attended the common schools of that state and afterward graduated from the high school of the town and then returned to farming and continued steadily at it until thirty years of age, owning his own farm. At that age he retired from that occupation and came to the west to seek what was to be found and to look for a place to take up another line of business. From all available information he decided that Oregon was the place for him to come to and so he did. After a tour of inspection to ascertain what information he could to aid his enterprise he chose Milton as the spot, and soon he had opened a general merchandise store, where he continued in successful business operation until 1899, when he accepted the nomination for treasurer of Umatilla county and in June of 1900 he was elected to that position by the Republicans. He is still the incumbent of that office. When in Milton he acted for several terms as city councilman and also as school director. He fraternizes with the A. O. U. W. and also with the United Artisans. It was before he left his native state that he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Parks. They have six children--Herbert A., J. Earle, Elmer H., Stanley, Cecil C., Mary K. His family are members of the Presbyterian church. His father, Joseph Yates, was a pioneer to the prairies of Illinois, coming there in 1845. Early the Yates family were pioneers to the raw land of savages this side of the Atlantic, and from that time to this there has not been lacking a pioneer spirit among them. The present treasurer of this county has not let the banner of his ancestors trail in the dust. It has crossed from ocean to ocean and still there are ready hands to carry it.
