Milton-Freewater IOOF Cemetery, Umatilla County, Oregon-Introduction <> Copyright by Iris E. (Scroggin) Wilson & Garland E. Wilson. 1984 Cemetery information : The Milton I.O.O.F. cemetery is located aproximately 1/2 mile from Hwy 11 in Milton-Freewater, Oregon and is reached by going East on S.E. 9th and Main St. to the top of the hill. The cemetery is fully tended and is maintained by the Milton-Freewater Cemetery Maintenance District. There are over 5000 burials. On March 22, 1886 the Milton I.O.O.F. lodge purchased 3 acres of land from W.S. Frazier for the purpose of instituting a cemetery. The trustees for the lodge at that time were Wm. Talbot, Nathan Pierce and Andrew Spence. The first burial was said to be John Dustan, laid away in the N.E. corner. Some early records state the cemetery was platted in 1885 but contained burials before that time. The State of Oregon cemetery survey printed in 1978 states the cemetary was started in 1878. The following records were assembled in the spring of 1984 and were obtained from tombstone inscriptions, cemetery records, family records and obituarys from early newspapers. Many discrepancies were found in spelling, dates, etc. in the various sources used in compiling this record and for the most part were copied as listed unless authentic records proved otherwise. Some burials were unlisted in cemetery records and some occurred while this survey was being assembled during April of 1984 and these are listed in this compilation.
