All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com April 4, 2008, 6:21 am Monring Oregonian October 30, 1904 Logging Foreman Shoots Workamn and Himself Dispute Over Small Sum Vuiolent Temper of Boss of Camp on the Grand Ronde Said to Have Been Intensified by Intoxicating Liqour La Grande,Or.,Oct.29-(Special)- A murder and suicide took place at logging camp No.4, about 13 miles up the Grande Ronde River from Hilgard,at an early hour this morning. The camp is operated by Edmnond and Longley. James Chesser,foreman of the camp,got into a hot dispute with a workman named Webster over a samll sum of money, not exceeding $2.50, and pulled his revolver,instanly killing Webster. Soon after another shot was heard anf when the men from the camp brushed to the scene,they found Webster dead and Shesser breathing his last and dying a few moments later. Chesser came to this country a few years ago from Michigan and took up timber claims in different parts of Eastern Oregon.After disposing of these,he went to work in the logging camps of the Grande Ronde Lumber company as foreman,where he had been for two years overseeing a crew. He was about 35 years of age and unmarried .It is thought that he had been drinking. He hada a violent temper. Webster was a single man and about 30 years of age. At this time it is not known where his people reside. Cornoer Henery, of La GRande, accompanied by William Grant, are at the scene of the tragedy tonight.
