Wakley iwakley@msn.com and August 3, 2006, 12:46 am The Dalles Chronicle, April 28, 2006 Alma Pearl Appling, 95, a resident of Dufur, died at a local care facility on Wednesday, May 10, 2006. She was born in Boyd on Jan. 3, 1911 the youngest of five children to Herbert and Effie (Wilson) Haynes. She lived at the family homestead on Center Ridge by Boyd until they moved to The Dalles during her school years where she graduated from The Dalles High School in 1929. She worked in The Dalles for awhile until she married Paul Benedict in Stevenson, and later moving to Dufur making her life as a homemaker. Paul passed away in 1965 and she later married Arthur Appling in Woodland, Wash. in October of 1968. She was a member of Dufur Christian Church where she taught Sunday School. She was active in the Full Gospel Businessman Assn. and involved in prison ministries with John Parker. They were a member of Good Sam Group and enjoyed traveling. She did artwork, stained glass, bead working, handcrafts and photo albums. Family and friends were an important part of her life. She is survived by, Nelda Potter of Dufur,and her former husband, Gary of Long Creek, Ore., Stella and Red Rowan of Ashfork, Ariz, Suzanne and Joe of Dufur, Donis and Herb Meier of Portland, Burton and Kathy Appling of Ariz., Keith and Mary Appling of Prineville; sixteen grandchildren; many great- grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Benedict; her husband Arthur; her brothers and her sisters. A viewing visitation will be held on Friday, May 19 from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 20 from 8 to 10 a.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 20 at 11 a.m. at IOOF Three Mile Cemetery with Pastor Bob Peterson officiating. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Dufur Christian Church. Memorials may be made to the John Parker Ministries c/o Dufur Christian Church.
