The Dalles Chronicle, July 25, 2005
     Harry Lester Biede, 87, a resident of The Dalles, husband, father and 
grandfather, died at the local hospital on Thursday, July 21, 2005.
     He was born October 5, 1917 in Emerson, Nebraska the seventh of eight 
children to William and Hannah (Fey) Biede. He was raised and attended schools 
near Emerson. 
     Harry worked on the family farm beginning at a young age. He continued to 
work on the farm when he married Norma Arlene Schopke on June 7, 1944 in 
Emerson. They rented a small homestead and farmed in Emerson and moved out 
West to The Dalles in 1957. In The Dalles, he worked for Harvey Aluminum when 
they first started operation and retired in 1982. 
     He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church since 1957, which 
included secretary/treasurer for the men’s group for 20 years and was a member 
of The Dalles Senior Center. He enjoyed playing pinochle with family and 
friends, putting together jigsaw puzzles and giving them as gifts to family 
members and gardening (especially his tomatoes). 
     He is survived by his wife, Norma, of 61 years, The Dalles; three 
children, Joanne Hoff, Bonanza, Ore., Kenneth and his wife, Judy Biede, The 
Dalles and Gwen Anderson, Bloomington, Minn.; five grandchildren, Jeff 
Anderson and his wife, Stephanie, Erik and Kristin Anderson, Ron Webber and 
Carla Webber-Smith and her husband, Chad; great-grandchildren, Ronnie, Erin, 
Jessica, Ty, Carson and Jeremy; his sister, Elaine Harris, Homer, Neb. He was 
preceded in death by six of his siblings.
     Memorial services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. on 
Friday, July 29, with Pastor Dorothy Nielsen officiating. Private interment 
will be held at The Dalles Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road.      
Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Trust Fund in 
memory of Harry Biede, 101 West 10th Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
