      Tallie Marie Birge, 88, a resident of The Dalles, died at her home on 
Monday, Nov. 24, 2003.
     She was born June 25, 1915 in Mabel, Minn., the sixth of eight children 
to Magnus and Laura (Larson) Gjertson and was raised on a farm near Backus, 
Minn.
     She married Jesse Herman Birge June 1, 1937, in Walker, Minn. and they 
lived in Minnesota until moving to Parkdale in March 1952. They moved to The 
Dalles in the spring of 1954. 
     She worked as a nurse’s aide at Columbia Basin Care Facility for 14 years 
in the 1960s and 70s. 
     She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she volunteered 
countless hours, including serving as Chairman of The White Cross Mission 
Circle for 25 years. She also volunteered at Judson Baptist College, and Child 
Evangelism Fellowship. She enjoyed making quilts, crocheting and making 
bandages for her Mission Circle. She also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, 
fishing, gardening and her "Atlanta Braves." Her greatest joy, though, was 
spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.
     She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Rev. Frank 
Haas, The Dalles; four sons, Robert and his wife, Sharon, Troutdale; Harold, 
The Dalles; Douglas and his wife, Susan, Monmouth; Jesse and his wife, Kim, 
The Dalles; nine grandchildren, Pamela, Janel, Nathan, Rachel, Lisa, Michelle, 
Shawna, Thomas and Joshua; 18 great-grandchildren, her sister, Lillian N. 
Meech, Fort Gibson, Okla. and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Gjertson, Brookings, 
S.D. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse H. Birge on Nov. 8, 1993; 
five brothers and a sister.
     Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home 
on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
     Funeral services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Friday, Nov. 
28, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Frank Haas officiating. Interment will follow at 
Odd Fellows Cemetery on Threemile Road at 1:30 p.m. Spencer, Libby and Powell 
Funeral Home are in care of arrangements.
     Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 3350 Columbia View 
Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058 or Hospice of The Gorge, 751 Myrtle St., The 
Dalles, OR 97058.
