Black Marlene J. Black, 52, a resident of Eugene, died July 31, 2003. She was born Nov. 18, 1950 to Willis and Margie Gholston of Mosier. She grew up in Mosier and graduated from Wahtonka High School. She attended Oregon College of Education and Portland Business College. She married Allen Black in Vancouver, Wash. in 1972. They were later divorced and she married Robert Hager in Eugene in 1995. She worked as a secretary until 1974 when she lost her sight due to illness. She was active in her church and in the blind community; she served as president of Supporting Independent Living of the Visually Impaired. She also formed and facilitated a support group for disabled women, volunteered for Head Start of Lane County, performed puppet shows featuring a disabled character to raise awareness, and consulted with the city of Eugene on Americans With Disabilities Act issues. She is survived by her parents; her husband Robert; son Kevin Hager; sisters Marilyn Shaw and Jeanne Reeves, both of Mosier, and Milli Gholston, Beaverton. A memorial service is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Aug. 5 at Bergan Baptist Church in Eugene; at her request, her remains were donated to science. Arrangements were by Musgrove Family Mortuary of Eugene.
