Surnames: Blake, Speck, Powell, Hein, McCoy, Murphy, Allen, Smith Allan Spencer Blake, 81, a resident of Maupin (Oregon) died at a local care center on Thursday, May 22, 2003. He was born November 16, 1921, in Mitchell (Oregon), the fifth of six children to Grover C. and Bertha (Speck) Blake. He started school in Pomeroy, Washington. The family then moved to Dallas (Oregon) until 1931, then moved on to Roseburg (Oregon). He graduated from Roseburg High School in 1940. He went to Midway Island as a construction worker in 1941 and was there when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. After returning to the United States, he ran a pack string in Alaska. In 1943 he joined the Navy and was in the 99th battalion of the Seabees. After WWII, he moved back to the Roseburg area and married Joyce Esther Powell in 1947 in Roseburg. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in construction until the later 1960s when he became self-employed in heavy construction. He moved to the Maupin area in the early 1970s, building roads and logging right of ways in the national forest and he continued this until the mid-1990s. He married Christina L. Hein on July 5, 1974. He also owned a ranch near Pine Grove (Oregon) and enjoyed raising cattle and sheep. He was also a former member of the Elks Lodge and a long time member of 701 Operating Engineers Union. He is survived by his wife Christina; two sons, Kip and his wife Patti, Tygh Valley (Oregon); David, Bend (Oregon); his daughter, B.J. McCoy, Eugene (Oregon); three stepsons and their spouses, Chad and Debbie Hein, Albany (Oregon); Clint and Tallie Hein, Portland; Christopher and Brenda Hein, Milwaukie (Oregon); 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jessie Murphy, Mulberry, Florida; Genevieve Allen, Bellingham, Washington; and Lois Smith, Milwaukie. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce, his brother Bill and his sister Lidona. Viewing and visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27 with Asa Jenson officiating and interment will be at Kelly Cemetery in Maupin.
