Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 9, 2006, 5:59 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, March 15, 1984 Hans Christian Blaser, 89, a longtime resident of The Dalles, died at a local nursing home on Tuesday. He was born in The Dalles on Dec. 3, 1896, the son of John and Marie Blaser, immigrant pioneers of Wasco County. His first job at the age of 11 was riding shotgun on the Dufur Stage Line and later he apprenticed to the Astoria Beverage Co., to become a bottler of soft drinks. Mr. Blaser joined the Army in World War I and served in the 608th Aero Squadron and played the saxaphone in the Army band. Later he worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a foreman of heavy construction, and then joined the Wasco County Sheriff's office and was its first motor vehicle officer. He and his brother, Walter, formed the Blaser Brothers Bottling Works, which later became The Dalles Soda Works. Mr. Blaser continued to operate that firm until he retired. He later managed The Dalles toll bridge for Wasco County. He organized The Dalles Follies and the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. He married Agnes Adkisson on April 19, 1919. He was a member and past member of Wasco Lodge No. 15, AF and AM; the Royal Arch Masons, the Owen T. Shepard Council No. 19; Royal and Select Masters; Commander No. 13 of Knights Temple; Lodge of Perfection of Pendleton; the Consistory of Baker; Oasis Shrine Temple of Charlotte, N. C. (where he was the oldest member); Columbia Chapter No. 33, Order of Eastern Star; Gaspar Shrine No. 3 of White Shrine of Jerusalem; David Shrine of White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 11; past president of the Northwest Shrine of Jerusalem; life member of The Dalles Elks Lodge; the historian of Old Wasco County Territory; member and president of the Old Wasco County Pioneer Association, and a Rainbow Dad for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Agnes, The Dalles; and a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Lola) Dixon, Pendleton, and nephew, John Blaser of Unity. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Smith Callaway Chapel with Dr. James Hazlett of Gateway Presbyterian Church officiating. Masonic Rites will be given by Louis Gregory and private burial will follow at The Dalles IOOF Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Masonic Lodge building fund or the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children.
