He was born Oct. 3, 1937, at Port Orford, the son of Howard and Evelyn Young Boice. He graduated from high school at Wasco. As a young man he was an excellent horseman, winning many trophies at horse events. His pride and joy was a 1957 Corvette he entered in racing events. He joined the U.S. Air Force where, after his basic training in Texas, he served in Hawaii. After his honorable discharge, he worked in the wheat fields and then left Oregon for Alaska and fished on several boats from 1961 to 1968. He met Joanne Pederson in Petersburg, Alaska in 1963 and they married on Oct. 24, 1964. Starting in 1964 he worked winter months for Western Marine Construction and in the fall of 1968 he began working full time for WMC building boat harbors, ferry terminals, dredging and breakwaters as well as underwater drilling. He worked for four owners during a 37-year career with WMC. In the fall of 1986, he and his wife moved to Washington to be closer to his job. He was an avid reader and gardener who especially loved his roses. He enjoyed traveling and cruising and playing golf with his son, Derek, his friend Steve, brother-in-law and his wife. He and his sister, Beverly, formed the Boice Family Scholarship Foundation for the benefit of students in Curry County. He is survived by his wife, Joanne, Normandy Park, Wash.; son, Derek Boice, Des Moines, Wash.; his daughter, Dia Foster and grandson, Carson, Burien, Wash.; his mother, Evelyn Carr, Fairview; his sisters, Beverly Clarno, Redmond; and Barbara Vance, Portland; father-in-law, Pete Peterson, Lacey, Wash.; aunts Mary Capps, Bandon; and Dora Autry; uncles Allen Boice and Alden Boice, Gold Beach; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and his half brother, Gary Boice. A celebration of life will be held Sept. 25 at the Coves in Normandy Park from 1 to 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to Boice Family Scholarship Fund, c/o Bonnie Cox, Pacific High School, P.O.
