Wakley iwakley@msn.com June 2, 2006, 1:57 am The Dalles Chronicle, April 25, 2006 Don Edward Brace Sr., 90, a resident of Harbor, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at a hospital in Gold Beach of natural causes. He was born Aug. 7, 1915 in Newport to John Loren and Bertha (Bowden) Brace. He was schooled in The Dalles area. In 1943 he began working at the naval shipyards in Portland as a welder building aircraft carriers for the war effort. During that time he grew fond of fellow welder Helen Katherine Anderson and they were married in Vancouver on February 25, 1944. The couple lived for a few years in Portland, Roseburg, and then Grants Pass before settling in Brookings. He worked as a truck driver for Agnew Lumber Company from 1968 to 1982 when he retired. The Braces loved to travel, touring North America for a decade in their RV together. He liked woodworking, fishing, and welding. He enjoyed puttering around his shop and making gifts for his family. He read everything, was known for his good sense of humor, and enjoyed a good life with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Helen, Harbor; son Don E. Brace, Jr. and wife, Theresa, Rogue River; son Wayne Brace and wife Susan of Grants Pass; son Timothy Brace and wife Joy, Ashland; daughter Carolyn Brace, Harbor; son Scott Brace and wife Kathy of Gold Beach; son Cliff Brace and wife Darci, Canby; brother, Jack “Bud” Brace, Spokane; sisters Della Baxter, Othello, Wash. and Betty Burba, Redding, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Lillian. Private burial will occur at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Grants Pass. The family requests no flowers be sent and that memorial contributions be made on- line through the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation at www.nwpf.org. Cremation is in care of Redwood Memorial Chapel, Brookings.
