Surnames: Brittain, Flinn, Monroe, Mitchke, Fischer, Brenner Chester "Leo" Brittain, 84, a resident of Wamic (Oregon), died at a local care facility on Friday, May 9, 2003. He was born October 17, 1918, in Wapinitia (Oregon) to Chester Harmon and Celia Jane (Flinn) Brittain. He graduated from Maupin High School and attended Oregon State University until enlisting in the Army Air Force in March 1942. He served in the Philippines and Western Pacific with the 5th Air Force 405 bomb squadron as a top turret gunner and was awarded four bronze service stars. He was in Okinawa when the peace treaty was signed, then served in occupied Japan until 1946. He married Thelma Monroe on November 28, 1944 in Columbia, South Carolina. After his discharge from the Army Air Force, the couple came back to Oregon to the family farm near Wamic where he farmed for 30 years. During that time, he was one of five original farmers initiating the building of Pine Hollow Reservoir for irrigation. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed photographing wildflowers. He is survived by his wife, Thelma, Wamic; his daughter Jennifer and her husband Bill Mitchke, Maupin; granddaughter, Sarah Fischer, Beaverton (Oregon); and his sister, Lorene Brenner, Portland. He is preceded in death by a daughter Margaret Brittain Fischer. No public funeral services will be held, at his request. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory.
