The Dalles Weekly Reminder, September 29, 1983
     Ernest J. Brock, 58, who served City of The Dalles Police Department for 
more than 32 years, died unexpectedly Saturday while fishing on the Columbia 
River near The Dalles.
     He was born June 7, 1925 in Portland, and was a resident of The Dalles 
for 53 years.
     Mr. Brock began service for the police department in 1951 as a patrol 
sergeant.  He later advanced to a detective sergeant, and in 1972 was named 
Assistant Chief.
     He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of The Dalles Eagles 
Lodge, the Oregon State Peace Officers Association and the Oregon Association 
of Chiefs of Police.  He has been a Wasco County deputy sheriff, and was 
holder of an executive certificate from the Oregon State Board of Police 
Standards and Training, the highest certificate attainable.
     Survivors include his wife, Florence, The Dalles; two sons, Norman Brock, 
Germany, Melvin Still, The Dalles; five daughters, Debbie Watson, The Dalles, 
Shannon Carsten, Portland, Jaycee Vielo, Denver, Colo., Liz Roberts, Florence, 
and Kay Still, The Dalles; two sisters, Alice Rockhill, The Dalles, and June 
Harp, Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren and several aunts, uncles and 
cousins.
     Funeral services were yesterday, (Wednesday) at St. Peter Catholic 
Church, the Rev. Timothy Mochaitis officiating.  City of The Dalles Police 
Chief Paul Nagy also spoke during the ceremony.
     Pallbearers included Melvin J. Shaw, Florence Chief of Police; William 
Bell, Oregon Board of Police Standards and Training Section Chief; Darrell 
Hill, TDPD Inspector; Jack Linderman, TDPD Commander; Scott Woods, TDPD 
Commander, and Laverne Veito, TDPD Corporal.
     Honorary pallbearers included Roger Roth, Mollala Chief of Police; Daniel 
Portwood, TDPD Corporal; Jack Robertson, Wasco County Sheriff's Department 
Chief of Police; Arthur Labrousse, TDPD Commander, Dale Breshears, OSP 
Trooper, members of City of The Dalles Police Department, and Frank Bohn and 
George Telfer of City of The Dalles Fire Department
