The affictive news is not unexpected to friends here, who have been solicitous for several months as to the outcome of her illness, and hope for her recovery was entirely given up a few days ago. No arrangements have been made as yet concerning the funeral. The body will be brought to this city, however, and the services will probably be held Friday. Definite announcement concerning the funeral and the life of the departed Dalles woman will appear in The Chronicle tomorrow. The Dalles Weekly Chronicle, Friday, September 22, 1911 Front page FUNERAL OF MRS. BROOKS Services over Remains of Pioneer Dalles Resident Held Sunday The funeral services over the remains of Mrs. S.L. (Anna Pentland) Brooks were held at the Congregational church at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Reverend D.V. Poling conducting assisted by Reverend D.B. Gray, a former pastor of the local Congregational church. A quartette choir, composed of Mesdames Carlton Williams, Harry Taylor and Messrs. A.J. Greenwald and D.V. Poling sang "Abide With Me," Gottschalk’s "Last Hope," and a special selection, "In the Hour of Trial." Three of the pall bearers were former pupils of Mrs. Brooks when she taught in the public schools of the city, before her marriage. They were J.H. Worsley, C.J. Crandall and Ralph Gibons. The other bearers were F.W. Wilson, M.Z. Donnell and E.H. French. The church was filled to overflowing with the lifelong friends of Mrs. Brooks, and beautiful offerings were banked about the casket and pulpit. The service was beautifully impressive throughout. Reverend Gray based his remarks on the scriptural text, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. " The remarks of Reverend Poling were in the form of a brief biographical sketch of the life of the deceased and a most impressive eulogy. Many former residents of The Dalles were present from Portland and other northwestern cities. Copied with permission from The Dalles Chronicle.com
