Jean Brown, 81, a resident of The Dalles, died Monday April 4, 2005. at the local hospital. She was born April 7, 1923, on the family farm in Brown County, S.D., near Rondell Township, the seventh of 10 children born to Ward and Bessie Dull. She grew up and attended schools in both South Dakota and Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho. She first visited The Dalles in the summer of 1939 at 16, when she rode here from South Dakota in a jalopy driven by her sister, Frances, and crowded with the siblings, cousins and friends. They came to work the fruit harvest, first picking cherries out the Mill Creek valley, then apples in the Yakima Valley, followed by her first view of the Pacific Ocean, before heading home to South Dakota. She married Harry W. Zeigler on July 3, 1941, in Milwaukee, Wisc. When he joined the Army, she followed as he was sent to various camps for additional training prior to being shipped overseas. Their first son was born Aug. 3, 1942, followed by a second in April 1945. Five days later her husband was killed by Japanese forces on Okinawa. She remarried to Noble H. Brown and bore him a daughter and a son. She cherished time spent with family and friends. She loved music in all its forms, and long scenic road trips, pinochle, baseball, and informal get- togethers. During her 12 years with the Wasco County Road Department she also became one of the founding members of Columbia Gorge (now Oregon Territory) Federal Credit Union. She held the position of treasurer and managed the credit union for 21 years, accepting $25 per month to cover her expenses. She was later instrumental in founding the Treaty Oak (now CGCC) Community College. She helped set up the college accounting and payroll systems, and stayed on as an employee of the college until her retirement. Survivors include her four children; Randall J. Zeigler of Pilot Rock; Ryan Craig “Twig” Zeigler, Ferndale, Wash.; Jane Dooley, Parkdale; and Kelly Brown, The Dalles; daughters-in-law Lois and Barbara Zeigler, and Nancy Brown, and son-in-law Victor T. Mulkey. Also surviving are grandchildren Scott Zeigler, Erin Hull, Jill Miller, Randee McKague, Heidi Mills, Heather Hedricks, Yo Burnett, Steve “Red” Wade, Danni Jean Franklin, Ian S. Dooley; great-grandchildren Andrea, Ashley, Ty, Jordon, Jacob, Kailee, Sydnee, Luke, Paige, Hayden, Brianna, Nick, Haley, Hannah, Ryan, Tommy, and Justin; great- great-grandson Micah James Roesel. She leaves two sisters, Virginia Thelen, Aberdeen, S.D.; and Joanne Cooper of Fallon, Nev.; a brother Russell Dull, Amherst, S.D.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, six siblings, a grandson, three nephews and a niece. A potluck memorial gathering will be held from 3-9 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Mt. Hood Towne Hall, 14 miles south of Hood River on Hwy 35 at the community of Mt. Hood. All are encouraged by the family to attend. Interment will be in Ashton, S.D. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
