He was born Oct. 21, 1918, on his grandparent’s farm in the Fifteenmile area near The Dalles. He was the second of five children born to Elmer R. and Anna (Johnson) Brown. He was raised in the Bakeoven area near Maupin, and graduated from Maupin High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. Upon returning from the service, he moved back to the Bakeoven area and married Mary Ann Spellman on Oct. 28, 1945. They lived and dryland farmed growing wheat and barley from 1945 to 1973 upon moving to The Dalles. While living in The Dalles, he worked as a handyman. He was a member of Kiwanis, Elks and Eagles Lodges, LaWonick Dance Club, Wasco Electric, Oregon Wheat League, Wasco County Pioneers, and ASC Committee. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, fishing, hunting, playing cribbage, bingo, and woodworking. He is survived by his two sons, Gary Brown and his wife, Susan, Wasco; Sam Brown and his wife, Toni, Madras; two granddaughters, Christy Brown, The Dalles; and Cathy Brown, Grass Valley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann on Jan. 11, 1999, his sisters, Ruth Ashley in 2005; Ellen Dreher in 1992; and his brothers, Clarence Brown in 1987 and Donny Brown in 1960. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Thursday, July 14, 2005 from 2 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2005. Interment will follow at Threemile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to The Dalles Senior Center, 1112 West 9th Street, The Dalles, OR 97058 or to a charity of choice.
