Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 5, 2006, 9:10 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, August 9, 1984 Alfred Emmitt Brown, 82, died at Mid-Columbia Medical Center, July 28 after a sudden illness. He was a lifelong resident of Tygh Valley. He was born Dec. 4, 1901 in Tygh Valley. He went to school in Tygh Valley and Dufur and he and a brother rode motorcycles to high school in Dufur. The vehicles they rode were among the first motorcycles in the area. As a young man, he worked for a threshing crew sewing wheat sacks, and later worked for the railroad from 1918 to 1922, on the Deschutes River. In 1922 he bought a service station in Tygh Valley and has owned and operated it ever since. In the early 1930's, Mr. Brown sold Plymouths and DeSotos and later Willys autos in Tygh Valley. He was also the John Deere dealer for 30 years and was a dealer for Standard Oil in Oregon for one of the longest periods of time of any dealer in Oregon. Also as a young man, he played saxaphone with a group called the "Dixie Strollers" in the 1930s. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge for 40 years, was active as a volunteer fireman and had been a member of the Swap and Swing Square Dance Club for 30 years. Survivors include three sons, Alvin, Dayville; Robert, Homer, Alaska; and Loris, Tygh Valley; a sister, Zelma Balzer, The Dalles; three brothers, Frank Woodland, Wash.; Clifford, Lebanon, and Lewis, The Dalles; 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife, Eddia died in 1965. Funeral services were Wednesday at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Elam officiating. Burial was in the Tygh Valley Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dick, Mike, Jim and Sam Brown; Ron Walker and Mike McLaurin. Memorials may be made to the Tygh Valley Fire Department or to the Southern Wasco County Ambulance Fund.
