Merritt L. "Bud" Brumbach, 81, a former resident of The Dalles, died in Salem (Oregon) on February 24, 2003. He was born in Portland on January 28, 1922, to Vernon and Katherine Brumbach. He grew up in The Dalles and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1940. He joined the U.S. Navy in March 1942 and served in the South Pacific. He survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Perkins, DD337, in 1943 and returned later to fight in the battle for Okinawa. He was discharged in 1946 and was recalled for the Korean War in 1950. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 37 years as a communications lineman, retiring in 1983. In 1984 he formed his own company, Brumbach Enterprises, selling communications equipment and material. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shaw (Oregon). He married Joan O'Brien in Vancouver (Washington) on June 27, 1959. Survivors include his wife, Joan; daughter, Katie and sons, Rick and his wife, Janis; Van and his wife, Jenifer; and Lew; grandchildren Amber, Matt, Amanda and Emily, all of Salem. He was preceded in death by his son, David. A memorial service is pending. Private interment will be at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
