Evelyn Marie Burtner Obituary Surnames: Burtner, Harding, Spencer, Betts, Egan, Albrecht, Baker, Miles, McNutt Evelyn Marie Burtner, 90, a resident of Dufur (Oregon), died at a Portland hospital on Thursday, January 16, 2003. She was born on September 23, 1912, in Bayne, Washington, the oldest of five children to Wilfred Arthur Spencer and Marie June (Harding) Spencer. The family then moved to Wasco (Oregon) before she started school. In 1931, she graduated from Wasco High School and then attended nurse's training at The Dalles General Hospital. She worked as a nurse in The Dalles and Pendleton (Oregon). She married Charles Francis Betts in 1933 and they lived in The Dalles and had four children before his death in 1954. In 1974, she married Lynn Lockley Burtner and they lived on their ranch in Dufur until moving to Nehalem (Oregon) in 1979, then returning back to Dufur in 2000 to be closer to family. She was an expert knitter and knitted many sweaters, afghans, and dishcloths for family and friends. In her later years, she learned to spin her own yarn. She loved music and played the piano, organ, and drums. Survivors include her husband, Lynn Burtner, Dufur; her sons, John Betts, Chiloquin (Oregon); Gary Betts, Dufur; daughters, Olive Marie Egan, Portland; Virginia Albrecht, Dufur; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, her sister, Ruth Baker, Corbett (Oregon). She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Arthur Spencer; sisters, Gene Miles and Idabelle McNutt, and her son, Frank Betts. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Dufur Christian Church in Dufur. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
