Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 28, 2006, 7:24 pm The Dalles Chronicle, July 14, 2006 Sandra (Sandy) Campbell, Wishram’s town leader, matriarch and owner- operator of the town’s only retail outlets, died unexpectedly Wednesday. Sandy Campbell was a lady who never forgot her roots. She was born Sandra Lou Howell in Massena, Iowa on July 27, 1944, the fourth child of Allen and Wilma Howell. Her father worked as a tavern owner, farmer, logger, and dam worker and the family moved often. It wasn’t until her father found a job at the John Day Dam and settled in Wishram during her sophomore year in high school that she found her true home. She was one of seven members of the 1962 graduating class at Wishram High School, and following graduation, worked in The Beanery, a local restaurant. She later moved to California and became a beautician in her aunt’s beauty shop. There she married Ken Campbell on July 20, 1969. The couple had two daughters: Shelly in 1971 and Kelly in 1972. The family moved to Seattle in 1976, but the happiest move in her life came in 1999, when she returned to Wishram. In a brief autobiography she wrote just before the move, Sandy said, “We bought the tavern-grocery building that used to be a gas station. Town populations is 500. The tavern is the only thing that is opened... I thought I was getting old for retirement, but we have a lot of hard work ahead of us.” Her goal was bringing peace and unity to the Wishram community, according to her family. She was a tireless promoter, not only operating the Pastime Tavern, the combination antiques/grocery store and the espresso deli, but sponsoring townwide Easter Egg hunts, stringing Christmas lights everywhere, planting flowers, planning potlucks and providing music. Recently, she helped Wishram celebrate Fourth of July with a party in the park she helped create. An outgoing person, she loved singing and dancing to her favorite 1960s songs while tending bar, and enjoyed gambling as well. That generous spirit translated to the whole community. “She always helped everyone, and gave everyone a second chance,” said her daughter Shelly. “Her goal was to bring everybody together." Sandy Campbell is survived by her husband of 36 years, Ken Campbell; daughters, Shelly Johnston and her husband Chauncey of Des Moines, Wash. and Kelly Van Dyke and her husband Jerry of Renton, Wash; grandchildren, Hailey, David and Kerry; sisters Mitzie Kerslake of Corbett and her husband John, Patsy Fifer of Wishram, and Norma Carsey and her husband Skip of Goldendale. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Gary Howell. A celebration of her life is scheduled for Saturday, July 15 at 2 p.m. at the Wishram Train Park, a facility she was instrumental in creating.
