The Dalles Weekly Reminder, February 23, 1996
     Walter Howard Carte, 81, a resident of The Dalles, died at Mid-Columbia 
Medical Center on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 1996.
     He was born April 29, 1914, in Enid, Okla., the eldest of three children 
to Charles and Altha (Worley) Carte.  He moved to Idaho at age 14 and 
graduated from Buhl High School in 1932.
     He earned a pharmacist degree from Idaho State University in 1939.  After 
college, he was head basketball coach at Emmett High School and then Idaho 
State University until moving to The Dalles in 1949.
     He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
     He was owner/operator of Service Drug Store until he sold the business in 
1971.  He then worked as a pharmacist for Columbia Park State Hospital and The 
Dalles General Hospital and later at the State Hospital in Pendleton until the 
mid-1980s.
     He served as Wasco County Commissioner from 1956 to 1970.  He was a 
member and former trustee of The Dalles Elks Lodge and enjoyed sports and 
playing bridge.  He coached St. Mary's High School basketball in the 1950s and 
also enjoyed volunteering at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in the emergency room 
and on Medical Access Resource Vehicle (MARV).
     He is survived by his wife, Sallie (Tshudy) Carte of The Dalles, whom he 
married in Pocatello, Idaho on June 14, 1940; his daughter and son-in-law, 
Mary Ann and Phil Kaser of The Dalles; four grandchildren; and brother Wayne 
B. Carte of Buhl, Idaho.  He was preceded in death by daughter, Melissa Carte 
Marchington, and his brother, James Carte.
     Private graveside services were held at Parklawn Cemetery on Saturday, 
Feb. 17.

Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home, 1100 Kelly Ave., The Dalles, OR 97058.
