Clifford, 77, a resident of The Dalles, died at the family cabin at Northwestern Lake in Washington, on Monday, April 28, 2003. He was born August 14, 1925, in Weiser, Idaho, the youngest of nine children to Tillman Orin and Gladys (Chandler) Clifford. He grew up in Weiser until moving in 1944 to The Dalles, where he was to start his senior year at The Dalles High School. But in November of that year he entered the United States Marine Corps. He was wounded on Iwo Jima while with the 5th Marine Division and was awarded a Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation. After the service, he returned to The Dalles in 1944. He married Lenore Marie Taylor on May 26, 1946, in Portland. He hired on with Union Pacific Railroad in 1950, as a brakeman. After 33 years of service with UPRR, he retired as terminal trainmaster of The Dalles yards. He was a member of the Dalles Elks Lodge and UPRR Old Timers Club. He was a die hard Oregon State Beaver and San Francisco 49er's fan and was a strong believer in the need for good athletic programs to be available to the youth. For many years, he actively participated in the football and basketball programs at St. Mary's Academy as well as the Western Little League and Babe Ruth programs of The Dalles. He was a gardening enthusiast, taking great pride in landscaping both his home in The Dalles and cabin at Northwestern Lake. He received several landscaping and beautification awards for his efforts. He is survived by his wife, Lenore, The Dalles; his daughter, Connie Marie Sanders and her husband, Charles, Portland; sister, Helen Thompson and her husband, Dale, Weiser, Idaho; sister-in-law, Dorthea Clifford, The Dalles; Earline Clifford, Gresham (Oregon); and Lois Clifford, Portland; a much loved extended family of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews living in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California, as well as many dear friends. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 2. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home. Interment with veteran's rites will follow at The Dalles St. Pete Catholic Cemetery.
